BOW AND ARROW—HOW MADE

BOW AND ARROW—HOW MADE—Can you tell us how to make a bow and arrow as the Indians usually made them?

Various kinds of woods, and even bones, were used. The dried wood was whittled to shape. Green raw hide was laid taut along the back, and wound with strips of sinew. Hoofs of elk, buffalo horns, etc., were made into glue to make the hide and sinew stick close. Arrows were made from straight sticks of the various “arrow bushes.”

Each tribe had its own tricks and fancies, but the best warriors and hunters used a long, slender bow rather than a short one.
