Bore slugging is done by forcing a soft lead slug through the barrel of a gun with a close fitting wood dowel. The slug is then measured to find the true diameter of the bore to ensure that cast bullets are sized precisely to the firearm. Bore slugging is most helpful for antique and military arms, in which close tolerances were not held during manufacture.
