Boils-My dog had something resembling a boil come over his eye. It kept spreading until it covered about half the top of his head, closing the eye. After a while it burs ejecting a bloody mucous, closed and burst again each time growing smaller until it disappeared. I kept it washed the best I could with carbolic acid water. His appetite was poor. A white scum formed over one eye, but I took it off with alum. The same thing is forming again. He is half blood and half foxhound. Could you tell of a remedy for this?
As a rule that sort of lump usually appears on the underside of neck, growing to size of hens egg and larger, will move up and down easily under the skin without apparent pain. Young dogs are more apt to get it and in a measure, is not a bad thing for them to have but must have proper attention lest it may result in ultimate death caused by absorption of contents into system. Soon as hard and seemingly at full size the knot or lump should be opened with pen-knife or other suitable instrument. Make incision on under side to allow contents to run off without pressing (not much will emit, only a little greenish blood-stained water) and reopen once each day so long as it fills-about a week, then let it heal and all is over. This ailment is caused by collecting in weakest portion impurities of the blood and, if drained off, leaves the dog in better health than before. A stimulant, such as Tonic Pills should be given for a week or ten days at same time for best results. Usually such lumps to not burst open and continue to grow larger till size of a goose egg-death soon results.
