BLURRING BACK SIGHTS—Please tell me what can be done to prevent the back sight on my .22 rifle from blurring.
It is possible that the sight blurs because the finish is worn off and it reflects light. If so, heat it in a gas or alcohol flame until blue, then plunge it into cold water. But what is more probable is that the sight is set too far back on the barrel, and is too close to the eye when aiming to come within the zone of universal focus. This is usually the cause of a blurred back sight, and the only remedy is to cut a new slot and reset the sight, a few inches farther forward; make a sight on a long base so that it may be set forward without cutting a new slot; or get a peep rear sight on the grip of the rifle and do away with the rear barrel sight.
