If there is any one way that is better than all others for taking this fish with hook and line it is with a live minnow, a shiner. The minnow is hooked through the lips, inserting the hook in the lower lip, underside and passing it out through the nostril. A snelled hook, about No. 1 or 1/0 is used, and a small swivel is tied between the snell and line, and the bait is cast to the place where the fish is supposed to be, allowed to sink and dart a bit, then slowly drawn in, pausing occasionally.
