Big Bore for Bears-I am interested in big bore guns and as I intend going to the North-west to hunt deer and bears, particularly the latter, would like to have some information. Is the .38-55 caliber powerful enough for bears? If it is not, what is?
I consider the .38-55 High Power heavy enough for bears of all kinds, especially since most of the shooting is at short range, but as you are interested in big bores, I presume that you are thinking of the old style black powder and lead bullet cartridges. In that case the .38-55, in my opinion, is not powerful enough. Personally I consider the modern small bores far superior of the old styles, but if I were choosing one of the latter arms for hunting bears, I would buy an express sight .45-70 Winchester. It is not an arm for long range shooting, but for ordinary hunting distances it is a good one and delivers a heavy blow. It is also light in weight which is an important point. If you want something decidedly modern, try the new .401 Winchester self-loader.
