Beaver skins and castor-will you please give me the average measurements of beavers skins, what is the valuable part of beaver castors? Is it the between the castors, or the castors themselves? How do you drive these, and how many does it take for a town?
It is difficult to give measurements on skins when they are not on hand to measure. Beaver skin should be stretched around, or nearly so, and one so stressed small one will measure up too, approximately, 22 or 23 inches in diameter ; from that up to 27 inches they will be graded as medium size; and the larger ones are graded large. It is the real castors that are bought and sold. I understand that they are used in some kind of medicine, or drug, and there are also used a scent for attracting other beavers to traps, also musk rats, lynx, marten, etc.. The oil sacks have no market value but are good for attracting certain animals. For mink they make a good bait; mice are wild to get them; they also attract the otter and the bear to a certain extent. To prepare the castors for market you simply hang them up and 1/4 camp and let them dry. When thoroughly dry their hard and somewhat brittle. How many would be required for a pound I do not now, but those from a large beaver, I presume, would weigh an ounce each one dry, which grew out as a master for each large beaver. The castors from a small beaver are much smaller, and as they only contain a small amount of the fluid and they are very light.
