BEST PLACE FOR FUR BEARERS—What place in the U. S. is the best for small fur-bearing animals, and how must the trapper be prepared for a season’s hunt?
I receive many requests for this information, but in all cases it is the same; I am unable to answer, and neither can anybody else tell you which is the best place, for to do so a man would have to be acquainted with all parts. I have moved about the country more than the average trapper has, but for all of that, the territory which I have investigated as prospective trapping ground is only a very small part of the United States. What I consider the best guide for those who want to locate on new grounds is the H-T-T, as the letters and descriptive articles from trappers on the ground tell what is found there, and the catches as reported should give you an idea of how much fur is there. As each and every one of us has this same source of information to draw on, you can see that readers of the H-T-T should know as much about the trapping conditions in various parts of the country as I do. The proper equipment for hunting and trapping depends mainly on where and how you will carry on the work. Here again you have the H-T-T and books that we publish, for a guide. Don’t forget the books, and remember that they were written for those who want information on the subjects which they cover.
