Bears Maximum Weight of Grizzly What is the maximum weight of grizzly bears, according to authentic records, also the average weight?
W.T. Hornaday, in his American Natural History, says that the average weight of the grizzly bears killed in the United States if fifteen years is between 500 and 600 pounds, and that the Rocky Mountains have not yet produced a wild grizzly bear that actually weighed over 800 pounds. He says that as far as he is aware the largest grizzly ever weighed was one from Lincoln Park, Chicago, which weighed 1153 pounds, yet hunters who saw it while it was living said it was larger than bears which they had killed and estimated at 1800 pounds. The weights of bears are usually estimated only.
