BEAR—WHEN FUR IS BEST—Please tell me when the fur of the bear is best—in fall, winter or early spring—and how to set a trap for them.
The fur is probably better in the spring than at any other time, just before it commences to fade. For trapping them the most common way is to make a V-shape enclosure of old rotten logs, brush, etc., about eight feet long, three feet wide and the same in height. The bait, almost any kind of old stale meat, is placed in the back of this pen and the trap set in the open end, fastened to a stout clog and carefully covered. The entrance is narrowed by placing sticks at the sides of the trap. There are various other methods also.
