BEESWAX — DESCRIPTION OF—How is beeswax prepared for market?
Beeswax is made from the honey combs, They are boiled and the wax is dipped off the top of the water and poured into pans or molds where it hardens quickly. This is all that is necessary with new clean combs, but to get the wax from the old combs is more difficult. A certain proportion will rise to the surface of the boiling water, but much will remain in the refuse at the bottom. There are many presses made which combine the boiling with heavy pressure, or combine steam and pressure, which gives the same results. If you have much wax to prepare it might pay to buy one of these wax presses, as the loss resulting from wax-making without a press would soon pay for one. It is possible also to construct a very satisfactory press yourself, if you get a bench vise screw, or you can make one from a lard press. The refuse must be dipped from the kettle and folded in burlap and then put under heavy pressure to force wax out. It must be kept hot all the time and even after pressing, a second boiling and pressing will yield considerable wax.
