Beagles | |
|
A smaller hound than the foxhound, with much longer ears, relatively, and shorter legs. Height is about 6 inches; weight, 25 pounds. The beagles small size allows them to work in very close cover, especially after rabbits and pheasant. The standard beagle is the best rabbit and small fur hound, not too fast, and a good trailer.
Small packs of beagles are also used in field hunting, being followed on foot; the game, rabbits and squirrels.
Beagles are easy to keep and make good family pets as long as the owner accepts that the bawl of a beagle is sure to wake the neighborhood at two in the morning. Beagles should not be left alone unsupervised outside, as they tend to run off in search of game animals and will certainly leave the yard in chase of your neighborhood bushy tails.
