BAY COLOUR. A bay horse is what we commonly call red, inclining to chestnut. This color varies several ways: a dark bay, or light bay, according as it is more or less deep : and likewise dapple bays. All bay horses have black manes, which distinguish them from the sorrel, that have red or white manes.
