


|  |  Barrel Erosion is the gradual erosion or wearing out of a barrel immediately in front of the chamber due to the high temperature and pressure of the burning gunpowder. Some cartridges such as the 30/30 Winchester do not cause measurable barrel erosion, while those that are high power such as the 220 Swift and the like can cause a barrel to erode relatively quickly. Barrel erosion can still occur, but is not nearly as large of a problem today as it was in the past, due mainly to the better steels used in today’s firearms.
