BARBERRY BARK—I would like to know something about barberry bark. We have plenty of it here and I am thinking of gathering some of it for market when trapping season is over. How is it peeled and cored, and what is it worth a pound, and where can I sell it?
Bark of Cascara Sagrada, also known as barberry and chittem, has a market value of about five cents per pound. I think it is peeled in mid-summer. The bark may be split open with an axe and run off with a hark “spud.” It is dried in the sun and when dry is broken into small pieces and sacked. I think you can find a market for it some’ where in your part of the country.
