Ballistics of .45-70-What are the ballistics of the Model ’87, 45-70 caliber Springfield rifle? What kind of cartridges will it handle and is it a good rifle for hunting any kind of game? Would the rifle be just as good if a piece of the barrel was cut off?

I am sorry that I cannot give the ballistics of this rifle, but I can give the ballistics of the .45-70 Winchester in the 26-inch barrel and I think that will answer. The Springfield would be a little the superior because of the longer barrel. With the .45-70-405 cartridge the muzzle velocity is 1317 feet per second, the muzzle energy is 1561 foot pounds, penetration of the lead bullet is 13 boards, with full metal patched, 18 boards. With the 500 grain bullet the penetration and energy are higher, but the velocity is lower.
