| | A Barrel Obstruction is a very serious situation to the shooter and any nearby observers as it can easily lead to a ruptured barrel and ruined rifle, resulting in personal injury. Any object that becomes lodged in the barrel is a barrel obstruction. Common barrel obstructions are snow and dirt, cleaning patches, smaller than chambered rounds inadvertently chambered and bullets from underpowered loads that may become stuck in the barrel. I occasionally check my barrel while hunting especially on snowy and icy days and while reloading on the range, the extra seconds spent are well worth the trouble.
If a round is fired with a barrel obstruction present, the pressure will build rapidly to dangerous levels, surely resulting in a ruined barrel or worse personal injury to yourself of a bystander.
