Interchangeable barrels can be found on shotguns, rifles and handguns and are exactly what they appear to be, by changing barrels the same basic action can be used with different calibers or gauges. Some notable interchangeable barrel systems are produced by Thompson Center Arms in the classic Contender series or in the newer Encore line.
The interchangeable barrel system is generally used in single shots as headspace does not need to be adjusted in a break open design, although some bolt actions have limited interchangeability depending on design.
