BALL CARTRIDGE IN SHOTGUN—Will it injure a shotgun to shoot ball cartridges?
I think that sometimes a ball would be better than shot for foxes. If the gun is a cylinder bore it will do good work at short range and will not be injured by round balls of the same gauge. If it is a choke bore, the bullets must be of smaller gauge so that they will pass easily through the choke. For a 12 gauge choke-bored gun use 14 gauge balls. Load the shell with powder and wad it the same as for shot but cut a hollow in the center of the top wad so that the ball will fit in. Do not use a wad over the ball but crimp the shell well. It is best to pour a little lubricant around the sides of the ball. It will do fair work when loaded in this way, but will not be accurate enough for fox hunting.
