| | Often termed ammo, ammunition is the entire, unfired round used in today’s handguns, rifles and shotguns. Rifle and handgun ammunition is usually housed in a metallic case, most commonly brass, but often steel as is commonly found in the cheaper imports. Shotgun ammunition today is housed in a plastic hull, but paper and brass hulls are still produced by some firms for those who like to do it like dad did.
Within the case or hull is the powder and bullet or shot, the powder is ignited by the primer, which as it burns produces gases under pressure which propels the shot or bullet down the barrel to the target.
