ALASKA TRAP PRICES, ETC.—I am going to Alaska to trap and would like to have some idea of the cost of traps and supplies at Wrangell, Skagway and Sitka.
This was referred to R. D. Tait, one of our readers who has had many years experience in that part of the country, and he gives the following answer:
“The prices of traps and supplies in all of the coast towns of south east Alaska are reasonable and com pare favorably with prices of the same goods in Seattle and Portland. You can buy such goods cheaper in Alaska (coast towns) than in Colorado. My advice is to buy everything there as the merchants keep everything that is needed and of the best quality, and they will treat you right. Take only your baggage; you are allowed 150 pounds. The fare from Seattle to Wrangell is $22 first class, and $15 steerage passage. It is a 4 1/2 days’ trip. I would advise you to make arrangements with the P. C. Steamship Co., Seattle, Wash. The guns used there are mostly .30-30 rifles and 12 gauge shotguns. Do not take a repeating shotgun into that country as the damp weather causes the shells to swell and stick in the gun.
