I read every issue of the H-T-T and thought I would answer Mr. Gordon Johnson's inquiry for Nova Scotia for an all around rifle. As I have owned quite a few and used them for the same purposes that he wants one for I think I can offer some good suggestions. I think I have finally got the best, at least for all the game that one may find in Vermont which includes deer and black bear.
My rifle is the 32-40 Winchester with half magazine. I use an auxiliary cartridge with it for rabbits and partridges and bait for my traps and also the animals that I catch in them. I can kill a fox or skunk as well as with a 22 and not tear them up any more if I am careful. It uses the 32 short Colt cartridge which is a very good size for small game. The full charge for the 32-40 and especially the hi velocity load is good enough for a real hunter to get deer and bear.
Regarding the combination rifle and shot gun in a double barrel I think it very good it you need a shot gun but all that I have seen were too heavy. Any way they were too heavy for me to carry around on the trap line. I don't use a shot gun much and do not think that the ball from a shot gun shoots accurately enough to be of much good beyond 50 yards. Furthermore it is not a sportsman's gun anyhow. Think of shooting a great big ball of lead into such game as deer.
