Airedale-What kind of hunting dog is the Airedale? What kind of hunting is he especially used for? What kind of disposition has he and is he good to children.
The Airedale is a good all-around dog for hunting, except for hunting game birds, as he is devoid of pointing instinct. He is much used in making up a pack of bear dogs, etc., because of his scrapping qualities. He also trails fairly well, but is not to be compared with the foxhound, or the bloodhound, in this respect. As a retriever from land and water, if well broke, he is very valuable. He very readily adapts himself to most any kind of work within his capability. If worked alongside of other hunting dogs, he quickly picks up the desirable traits and eventually lead the chase. He is of rather peaceable disposition, but ready for a scrap at the slightest provocation and then proves a dangerous for. If brought up with children he becomes attached to them and guards them well; as a rule, however, he is not so mild a dispositioned dog as to make him a special children’s playmate-inclined to be rather snappy.
