Airedale-Night and Day-I want a dog for coons, opossums and squirrels; what kind would you advise me to get? Can you tell me what buckhounds and Airedales are?
If there is any kind of dog that would be good for coons and opossums at night and squirrels by day, I think it is the Airedale. A hound is no good for squirrels. I can tell you what an Airedale is but I do not know what the buckhound is, unless it is a Scottish deerhound, and that is probably what is meant. This is one of the fast running dogs of the greyhound type that chase game by sight. There are a few of them in America. The Airedale terriers are quite common in this country. The Airedale is one of the largest of the terriers, and originated, it is said, by crossing the Welsh terrier with the English otter hound. They weight about forty or forty pounds and have a rough, wiry coat, black and tan, or grey and tan, mixed. They are very useful dogs, as they can be trained to hunt almost any kind of game, also to retrieve dead game. They are good trailers, though hardly equal to the foxhound, and are good fighters too. For all around hunting for furbearing animals they are probably better than any other dog.
