The slide action, or pump action as it is commonly called is found on many pump shotguns such as the Mossberg 500, Remington 870 and Browning BPS and a few rifles, most notably the Remington’s model 760 and 7600.
The action on a pump gun is unlocked upon firing of the cartridge at which point the shooter, slides or pumps the forend back toward the receiver, ejecting the spent case. Fully sliding the forend back into the forward position, loads a fresh round into the chamber, cocks the hammer and locks the action for a fast follow up shot.
