.44 CALIBER WINCHESTER—I have purchased a Winchester carbine, .44 caliber, and would like to know if it is any good for bears, deer and similar game? What is its killing range and what is the best bullet to use?
When the repeating rifles were first put on the market, the .44 caliber was the most popular for hunting big game, and this caliber has probably more big game animals to its credit than any other size. I have killed bears with this arm and have known of a number of moose being killed with it. However, its day is past and today it is seldom considered worthy of a place among big game guns, having been superseded by the long range, small bore, smokeless weapons. Its killing range is about 250 yards. With the H. V. cartridge and soft-point bullet, which is of comparatively recent origin, the effective range is increased considerably. This is the best cartridge to use for hunting.
