.44-40 and .45 Colt’s-Is there any other cartridge that may be used in the Colt’s Frontier revolver, .44-40 caliber; I mean can a cartridge of less power, like .44 Colt or the .44 Webley be used in it? Is the .44-40 cartridge more powerful than the .45 Colt? I have heard that it is better in range and knock down power.
The only cartridge of lighter load that I know of that can be used in this arm in the one loaded light by Remington. You know the .44-40 shell is slightly tapered or shouldered and the real caliber is .42, so the straight .44 caliber cartridges cannot be used well in a gun chambered for the .44-40. The Winchester Repeating Arms Co. furnish this cartridge loaded with 28 and 38-grain charges of black powder, and the Remington Arms Co., load it with 28, 35 and 40 grains of black powder. I think the .44-40 and .45 Colt have practically the same power, range and accuracy.
