.32-20 FOR DEER AND BEAR—Is the 32-20 Winchester rifle, Model 1892, powerful enough for deer and bears in the Adirondacks and what is the killing range of this arm? Would it be good for general hunting in the district named?
No, I do not consider it heavy enough for such game. Deer and black bears are sometimes killed with this cartridge and the party who does the stunt is usually loud in his praise of the small rifle and says that it is plenty powerful for such game, but on investigation we invariably find that the rifleman had a standing shot, or anyway, was lucky enough to place the bullet in a vital spot where any bullet, similarly placed would have killed the game. The big game hunter should not depend on such shots. Regarding the range, the Union Metallic Cartridge Co. give the accurate range of the 32-20 H. V at 100 yards and the black powder cartridge as well as that loaded with low pressure smokeless powder at 150 to 200 yards. Just what is meant by “range for accuracy” I do not know, but it would simply imply that the black powder or low pressure is more accurate than the high velocity, though not so powerful.
