.30-30 FOR ALL ROUND HUNTING
.30-30 FOR ALL ROUND HUNTING—Can you tell me what rifle is suitable for hunting in the White Mountains?
For a rifle to use in the White Mountains you will find no better than a .30-30 for the game found there, which is black hear, deer, bobcat, rabbit and partridge. The furbearers are the mink, skunk, coon, rats, fox, weasel, otter, and fisher, the latter rare. There is a twenty cents bounty on hedgehogs. A .30-30 a .22 repeater, and a 12 gauge hammerless shotgun is a good combination for hunting there. The best hunting is around the foot of the mountains. Deer are plentiful and there are quite a few bears. Woodsville is a good place to get off at, and you can strike into what is called the Zeeland woods, about twenty miles from anywhere. There used to be a railroad into the woods to a lumber camp, but nothing remains but the ties now, and it is well grown up and makes good cover for deer. There are camps all through the woods with stoves, dishes, and wood. Leave all things just as you found them, and leave plenty of dry wood. There are many rivers and streams where rood trapping can be had, and there is good trout fishing, but other fish are scarce.
My idea of the proper rifle for use in the White Mountains is that the .33 Winchester is the proper thing. For my use there is no better—five cartridges in the magazine and one in the barrel—I think you will have to look a while for a finer balanced gun, that works as nicely and stops so well what it hits. Last fall while hunting in the Adirondacks I saw three deer coming my way and with my .33 I downed two and missed the third, firing only three shots, in about fifteen seconds, which I thought was doing well for a man of 68 years.
