.35 CALIBER FOR MOOSE AND GRIZZLY—Is the .35 caliber Winchester, Model 1895, heavy enough gun for moose and grizzly bears?
The .35 Winchester, Model ‘95, is one of the most powerful rifles made in the United States, and for the game mentioned there is no better killing cartridge than the .35 Winchester. Many a grizzly bear has been killed with a .30-30 and many hunters consider the .30-30 heavy enough for any American game, yet the .30-30 is a toy compared with the .35 Winchester. I have known of a number of moose being killed with a .44-40 black powder gun, and ordinarily a heavy rifle is not needed. The .35 Winchester is powerful enough, and in many cases more powerful than necessary, for any American big game. Any model 1895 rifle is big enough for any game.
