No, they are not the same; there is a slight difference in the caliber, the .32 Special being slightly the larger, and the shells are not alike. If you compare the two rounds you will see that it would-be impossible to use both in the same gun. The .32 Special is a bottle-necked shell, while the .32-40 is of the straight taper class.
