.30 Government Cartridges-Is the .30 Government, Model 1906 cartridge, with 150 or 180 grain bullet, reliable for game as large as elk or moose? Will one gun use both weights of bullet? What is your opinion of the Model 1895 Winchester for hunting this game? Is there any difference in the shooting of a regular or carbine rifle? If I use a Sheard gold bead front sight, what rear sight would match?
The .30 Government, Model 1906, is the most perfect of all long range cartridges. The Winchester rifle of this caliber will handle both weights of metal cased bullet as well as the 190 grain soft point bullet of U.M.C. make. The Model 1895 Winchester is all right-a splendid big game rifle, and there is practically no difference in the shooting of the carbine and sporting style; there is only two inches difference in the length of the barrel. I would prefer the carbine. You can use any rear sight with the Sheard front sight.
