257 Roberts

257 Roberts

The 257 Roberts is named after Ned Roberts, who spent considerable time in the 1920ís developing a cartridge for different cases, before finally settling on the 7 x 57 Mauser. The 257 Roberts found popularity quite quickly as a wildcat cartridge, as a result a number of manufacturers began to chamber rifles for it, including Winchester for their model 54 and 70. It quickly became a popular cartridge, being the top seller in the varmint/deer category in 1955. It has sold steadily until recently when a number of manufacturers decided to discontinue the 257 Roberts.

The 257 Roberts is sometimes referred to as the 257 Remington-Roberts. This is because in 1935, Remington revamped the 257 Roberts, changing the shoulder angle. Remington chose to include Robertís name in recognition of his devotion and work to the 257 Roberts. The load for this new cartridge was a round nose bullet which provided low chamber pressures, this was little improvement on cartridges already available on the market place. This changed when hand loaders discovered the cartridges could be changed to work with long spitzer bullets.

The 257 Roberts cartridge can be used for varmint hunting. It also has a very strong reputation among big game hunters. Some very well know hunters claim the combination of 257 Roberts with 120 grain spitzer at 2,800 fps is simply unbeatable and remains a favorite for this very reason. This is despite a number of manufacturers deciding not to make new models with the 257 Roberts.

The 257 Roberts can be used for different hunting disciplines. As already mentioned, it is almost unrivalled as a long range varmint cartridge. It also performs excellently on antelope, black bear, deer and other medium/large game. Anything larger and it would be wiser to consider a more powerful rifle and cartridge combination.

In summary, the 257 Roberts is a piece of cartridge history. It was for a long while and most likely will continue to be a favorite for small game and varmint hunting. It is still an accurate, powerful and most importantly an effective cartridge, suitable for all levels of shooters.
