22 Special vs 22 Long Rifle
Do you think the .22 special would make a better rifle for small game and target shooting than the .22 long rifle?
Answer—I believe you will be better satisfied with the .22 long rifle for the uses you mention. This shell, originated by the Steven's Arms & Tool Company, is beyond doubt one of the most accurate rim-fire cartridges ever made. It will show greater accuracy than the .22 special (or .22-7-45, -22 Winchester, .22 Remington, all of which are practically the same) at all ranges and although it is slightly less powerful, it should prove satisfactory for use on all sizes of game upon which a rim-fire .22 should be used. You will find the .22-7-45 a little too powerful and expensive for target shooting and as the other holds up better at long range, costs considerably less and is easier to obtain at small stores and out-of-the-way places, 1 would not consider it a desirable weapon for general shooting. A .22 rifle is usually purchased with the intention of being shot extensively and when you consider that the .22 long rifle Lesmok cartridges can be obtained for $3.35 per thousand while the specials cost $5.00 for the inferior black powder loads it will be seen that one can very quickly save the price of his gun by choosing a weapon to handle them. Another point in the favor of the long rifle is that you will be able to use the short and long shells in the same arm, thus increasing its usefulness and economy.
