.22 Shot Cartridges-I recently bought a second hand .22 caliber rifle chambered for the .22 short, and as the barrel is in bad condition, rusted, would like to know whether I could use the .22 long shot cartridges in it.
I do not know about this but am inclined to think that you could use them if the action will take such a long cartridge. It may be necessary to ream out a little bit of the rifling in front of the chamber, and that would spoil it entirely for the use of bullets, and if not very carefully done would spoil it entirely for the use of bullets, and if not very carefully done would spoil the barrel for all use. If you want to use shot in it, and find that the action will handle the shot cartridges it would be best to have the barrel bored out smooth, for it will be worthless for use with shot unless it is smooth bored.
