22 Hornet

The 22 Hornet became available in 1930. Developed and manufactured by Winchester, the 22 Hornet became the first varmint cartridge made by a United States gunsmith. The 22 Hornet has a rich history dating back originally to the 1920ís and originally developed by famous wildcatters. The 22 Hornet was perfect for shooting varmint and some larger animals.

The original work on the first 22 Hornet was completed by Col. Townsend Whelen and Captain G. L. Wotkyns at the now famous Springfield Armory. This was before being taken on by Winchester and released commercially. It is known as the original small bore cartridge and in a way opened the doors for other small bore cartridge makers to follow.

The Springfield Armory was responsible for a great deal of the United States weaponry research and manufacturing between 1794 and 1968. As well as the 22 Hornet, many other well know rifles and cartridges were first thought of at Springfield Armory. Springfield Armory is no longer a government arsenal, instead it is a privately owned company.

Nowadays, there are plenty of alternative cartridges to choose that are considerably more flexible and versatile. However, for the die hard fans of the 22 Hornet they are still available and still performing at a very high level. In fact, in certain conditions it may even outperform more modern cartridges. Itís also important to note that the 22 Hornet has been available in single shot rifles and bolt action rifles, this has meant that it has always been able to sustain unprecedented accuracy.

The 22 Hornet is a cartridge that is covered in history. For close to three quarters of a century it has been used for shooting smaller animals and in some cases predator control with unnerving accuracy. The grand father of small bore cartridges is still going strong, all major gun manufacturers in the US still develop rifles in 22 Hornet. With 22 Hornet rifles available from $200, itís most definitely possible to take advantage of this most accurate cartridge without breaking the bank.
