Bullet Diameter - .1725
Date Introduced – 1971
Trim-to Length – 1.786
Primer Size – Small Rifle/Small Rifle Magnum
Introduced in 1971 by Remington and based on several wildcat such as the 17/223 and 17/222 and was the only commercially available 17 caliber centerfire available until 2007 when Remington introduced the 17 Remington Fireball. The 17 Remington while never as popular as Remington would have liked does have the great distinction of being one of only a few commercial cartridges that can boast velocities greater than 4,000 fps.
A very effective varmint cartridge the 17 Remington reduces pelt damage over the larger 22s and has reduced report and recoil making it a perfect choice for hunting around settled areas. The small 17 caliber bullet is greatly affected by wind however and shooting in a crosswind outside of 200 yards can prove challenging.
The 17 Remington has received a bad rap through the years as a barrel burner and as a cartridge that rapidly fouls the bore, but with today’s powders and a careful cleaning, neither point is valid.
