17 HMR
17 hmr was introduced in 2002 by Hornaday in conjunction with Marling and Ruger. Formally called the 17 Hornaday Magnum Rimfire the 17 HMR is a 22 WMR necked down to accept a 17 caliber bullet. Factory loaded ammunition is loaded with either a 17 or 20 grain bullet and is able to leave the muzzle at an impressive 2500 feet per second.
The 17 HMR shoots flatter than its parent 22 magnum and allow hits on distant targets to be made with regularity if the shooter does his or her part. While 17 HMR ammo is not as widely available as 22 rimfire ammo, that is changing as more people switch over to the better performance of the 17 caliber round. 17 HMR ammo also is generally more expensive than 22 rimfire ammunition due in part to the high performance bullets they are loaded with.
