Friend readers and brother trappers and sportsmen: I am giving you a set for coyote which is a good one. I have never heard of it being used by other trappers and while on my trap line have never run across a set like it although I have found a good many kinds of sets used by other trappers. This set I am going to tell you about I have found very satisfactory. The coyote is a very slick animal but he can be fooled the same as any animal. They are a curious animal and you want to take advantage of a curious animal.
When a coyote runs across an old camp fire with scraps of meat thrown around he will eat the scraps of meat and dig around the camp fire, so to take advantage of this, cut some green twigs that will make lots of smoke and build a fire. Be sure to have it smoke lots, then set your trap and hold it over the fire in the smoke. After you have made it fast to a suitable drag, use about a number 3 Victor trap or a trap large enough to hold any coyote. When the fire dies down take a stick and put the trap in the middle of the ashes but do not tuck it or don't try to cover it; then take some dry leaves, two or three hands full and put over the traps and set fire to these; then when the fire cools, it looks like any camp fire and a coyote can't tell the difference. Then scatter a few scraps of meat (chicken is the best) around and go away. When you go to
look at the trap you are sure to have him if lie came around. This is the best blind set for coyotes I know of.
