Finishing a Firearm Stock | |

First let me say that no piece of wood is fit for use until it remains at the same weight for one year. This test shows that all the moisture is out of it.
Once you have carved the stock to your liking, rub down all roughness on the surface with fine sandpaper. Then go over the entire surface with a soft rag or sponge wet with warm water. Set the wood away in a warm and dry place for 24 hours. This will raise the wood fibers and they must again be rubbed down with fine sandpaper; and again, wet and dried as before, repeat this for several days until the wood remains smooth.
Now get from your local painting supply dealer a small container of wood-filler and give the stock two good coats, letting each coat dry thoroughly before making the next application.
Finally give the wood a thorough hand rubbing with a soft, woolen cloth or piece of clean chamois leather and then coat the wood with pure unboiled linseed oil. Repeat this every day, letting each oil coat get well dried and giving a good, dry rubbing between coats of oil.
Don’t try to skimp on the effort involved and try to get away with a coat or two of varnish, it won’t work and you will have wasted all the time you put into creating the stock.
