Cleaning a Firearm Action
The action of my .25-20 repeater has recently become so full of dirt and grit that the action grinds when worked. What is an easy way to remove this matter without injury to the gun?
I am glad to be able to tell you what will clean out the action of your rifle for I have frequently had guns of my own in the condition you describe. The worst case I remember was of a .32-20 Winchester with which I crawled nearly a quarter of a mile through soft mud to get a shot at a flock of geese feeding on a field of green wheat. To clean out the actions of rifles I pour through them a quantity of hot water in which a little soda has been dissolved. You can do this without dismounting your weapon in any way or if you wish you can remove the butt-stock. There is no danger of the action rusting, for the water dries up entirely on account of its own heat. A tea-kettle will be found the most handy container from which to pour the water.
